JONATHAN GEYEVU
Kent, 23
Identified by the Vortex Jazz Club
Jonathan is a pianist and composer. He leads a five piece music group named Sojourner, with a repertoire based on original compositions influenced by diverse music styles from across the globe. Sojourner has played at many music venues around London, most notably The Vortex, Charlie Wrights and the Jazz Refreshed night at Mau Mau, Portobello Rd. The group recently performed at the Barbican as support to Abdullah Ibrahim. Jonathan began learning classical piano at the age of nine but, excited by some old swing records, was soon itching to learn jazz. He started learning with a jazz tutor and at fifteen, was invited to perform in the 2000 ABRSM high achievers concert at the Royal Opera House. Jonathan recently spent nine months in Ghana, gaining firsthand experience of music from the Volta region, where his father is from. He learnt a great deal from observing the region’s musicians and dancers, which in turn has greatly inspired his approach to music.
